Why measure force?

Industrial Challenges

Force measurement is essential in any application where tensile, compressive, or shear forces need to be monitored: packaging opening tests, mechanical assembly validation, and strength testing in R&D. Insufficient force can lead to safety issues; excessive force can damage components or impair the user experience.

01 Product Safety

Uncontrolled opening force compromises the integrity or accessibility of the packaging.

02 Quality & Repeatability

Reproducible measurements ensure batch compliance and reduce non-conformities in production.

03 Regulatory Compliance

Metrological standards and traceability for the pharmaceutical and food industries.

Force Measurement in Industry: Challenges and Applications

The concept of mechanical force is central to the manufacturing of a wide range of products. Force measurement is essential in any application where tensile, compressive, or shear forces need to be monitored: cap tightening, package opening tests, and strength testing in R&D. Insufficient force can cause leaks or safety issues; excessive force can damage parts or make it impossible for the end user to open the device.

These inspections are essential for addressing safety, quality, and marketing concerns, as well as regulatory requirements—particularly in the pharmaceutical and food industries.

ACRN offers its force measurement instruments in three main application categories:

Packaging and Bottling Industry

The opening force of the bottle-cap system or the pouch must remain within a specified range: not too low (risk of leakage or contamination), nor too high (risk of difficulty in opening for the user). The dynamometer is the standard instrument used for this inspection, which involves random sampling from the production line.

Tensile and Compression Tests

In the automotive, mechanical, and aerospace industries, tensile and compressive strength are fundamental safety parameters. ACRN test benches allow these parameters to be verified with a resolution of one-hundredth of a Newton.

Material Qualification in R&D

In research and development, characterizing the strength of materials, films, and adhesives requires reproducible and traceable measurements linked to COFRAC national standards.

What is a force measuring instrument?

A force measurement instrument—known as a dynamometer, force sensor, or tensile testing machine, depending on the context—is a precision device that measures the force applied to an object under tension, compression, or shear. Force is measured in newtons (N) or kilogram-force (kgf). Most modern devices are electronic and offer direct digital readouts, data export, and PC connectivity for traceability.

There are several technologies available depending on the application: portable electronic force gauges for manual inspection during production, motorized tensile/compression test stands for tests requiring optimized repeatability, mechanical force gauges for environments without a power supply, and embedded force sensors for in-line production monitoring.

How do you choose a force measurement instrument?

The choice depends on several factors: the force range to be measured (in N or kgf), the type of samples to be held, the frequency of testing, the need for traceability, and the desired level of automation. ACRN supports its customers from needs analysis through to implementation: selecting the sensor, force range, and gripping accessories, and integrating the system into the existing quality system. Our equipment is designed to be durable, scalable, and serviceable, with the longest lifespan on the market.
