ASTM D3078 test procedure, step by step

  1. Fill the transparent vacuum chamber with water.
  2. Submerge the package and keep it fully under water, for example with an immersion presser.
  3. Close the chamber, apply the vacuum level set in your product specification and hold it for the defined time.
  4. Watch the package: a steady stream of bubbles coming from the same point indicates a leak and shows exactly where it is.
  5. Release the vacuum, remove the package and check it for water ingress.

What ASTM D3078 can and cannot detect

ASTM D3078 is a bubble emission test: it works on flexible packages that contain headspace air, such as pouches, sachets, bags and trays. It gives a pass or fail result and locates the leak, but it does not measure a leak rate.

For packages with little or no headspace, or for liquid-filled containers, a dry vacuum test or a methylene blue dye test is often more suitable.
